First Post

Hello, You. I'm writing this blog to record all the consequential and inconsequential things that may occur while I am here at school.

As this is my first post, I think I should make it clear that I am a first-year college student, living in a dorm with one roommate. I am planning on majoring in engineering (yes, I know it's hard. No really, I know).

My dorm consists of thirty freshman and two upperclassmen (the RAs). The thing about my dorm is that it is a "Wellness" dorm, meaning no alcohol or other such substances are allowed on the property and the consequences for being drunk (or high w/e) are more severe. At the first dorm meeting, the RAs announced this. I knew, going in, that the dorm was a wellness dorm, but there were a few cries of surprise from a few people during that meeting. I honestly have not seen a few of them since.

Ironically, across the yard from my dorm are two sororities and one fraternity. Today marked the beginning of rush week, which means that the girls all sing cutesy little chants (like that is going to make people like them..not?) and the guys drink a lot of beer (which does actually make more people like them).

Because of Hurricane Irene and an innocent little squirrel (that unfortunately exists no more -- it fell into a transformer and blew), the school lost power Saturday. All the buildings, except my dorm, that is. It's been nice not having to deal with no electricity or classes (since the first day of classes were cancelled (which hasn't happened in the fourteen years my engineering professor has worked here (he told me) (in an email)), but I am anxious to get started and get into a normal schedule again. I'll feel better then, even if I am overloaded with homework (which is bound to happen).

The best parts of my day were running with an orientation friend (ouch), having a nail painting party at a different orientation friend's dorm room (random, slightly awkward, but fun), and having a Chinese-cuisine/Star Wars movie night at my dorm.

The real fun begins Wednesday. Calculus, chemistry, engineering lecture, and engineering lab.

Peace.
